Stree, directed by 'Siddhartha' (a pseudonym for Gour Prasad Ghose, Parbati Ghose & Ram Chandra Thakur) was released in 1968. Stree got Best Feature Film in Odia award in 16th National Film Awards.

Movie Details

1968 saw a new production Stree under the banner Sarathi Films. Story was by Parbati Ghose under the pen name Srabani. This was the second directorial venture of the trio of SIDDHARTH namely Parbati Ghose, Gour Prasad Ghose and Ram Chandra Thakur. Gour-Parbati scored a hattrick of National Awards with ‘Stree’. Stree adjudged as Best Feature Film in Odia in 16th National Film Awards.

The Ghose’s ongoing tradition of introducing new faces and talents continued with this movie. Jadunath Routray, Shyamalendu Bhattacharya and Sunita were introduced in major roles. Guru Raghu Datta debuted as dance director. Dancers like Kukumina, Ratna Ray and Alok Bahidar debuted on screen. Sujata Anand was introduced and later became a famous actress. Ruma Guha Thakurta, famous Bengali actress/singer, made a guest appearance. Swarup Naik shot to fame with his portrayal of Bijuli. He penned his rst lyrics for a song which was picturised on his character and which made him very popular. Their son Romi had the pivotal role of Nayan which earned him a nomination for a National Award in the Best Child Artiste category.

With ‘Stree’, Gour Prasad significantly contributed to the Odia Film Industry. He paved the path for future producers to get subsidy on loans through OFDC. With support of the then government he was instrumental in getting Odia cinema recognized as an Industry.

Plot:

Anuradha, a happy-go-lucky college girl, and her only brother, who is a doctor, go out for a walk on the sea shore. There they save Debabrata, a young man from drowning and bring him home for treatment. Anuradha falls in love with the young man and their marriage is arranged. However, on reaching her husband’s house she discovers that he is a widower with a son, Nayan. She feels bitterly hurt but accepts the motherless child. Bhanu, the sister-in-law of Anuradha does not like her and poisons the mind of Debabrata against Anuradha. Debabrata leaves the house with Nayan but on the way the child is stolen by a child-lifter. Truth, sincerity, faith and tolerance on the part of Anuradha dispels the dark clouds and she is happy and gets united with her family again.
